Meet The Artist: JFury

Na een lange tijd geen artiesten meer geïnterviewd te hebben vonden wij het wel weer eens tijd voor een Meet The Artist! We vroegen JFury of hij geïnteresseerd was, voor de mensen die JFury niet kennen check DEZE, DEZE en DEZE post!

Stel je maar eens voor, wie ben je, hoe oud ben je?
Justin Phillips A.K.A. JFury. Ik ben een zelf ontwikkelde artiest die in Salinas California (US) woont. Ik ben getrouwd met mijn geweldige vrouw Adrianna en we hebben twee kinderen waar ik behoorlijk de handen vol aan heb. Ik run een hondentraining praktijk en doe het meeste van het customizen 's nachts, als de familie al op bed ligt.

Waarom JFury?
Ik noem mezelf JFury omdat mijn graffiti-tag als kind 'Fury' was. Toen ik in de toy-art belande besloot ik weer deze naam te gaan gebruiken maar dan met de J van Justin er voor.

Wanneer kwam toy-art in je leven?
Ik kwam het voor het eerst tegen toen ik met m'n gezin in Disneyland was en toen hun 'vinylmation figures' zag. Hierna stuitte ik al snel op KidRobot en sindsdien ben ik er verslaafd aan. Ik vond het geweldig om zo veel verschillende artiesten op dezelfde platformen te zien werken en er zo veel verschillende dingen mee doen.

Hoe lang customize je al?
Nou ik ben nog steeds erg 'nieuw' in het customizen van toys. Ik ben in april 2011 begonnen en sinds dien heb ik al meer dat 70 toys gedaan. De eerste paar maanden gebruikte ik Sharpie Paint Markers om mee te customizen aangezien ik nog nooit wat had geschilderd. Het probleem van stiften is dat niet alle kleuren bestaan en daarom kocht ik in oktober een paar kwasten en heb ik mijzelf geleerd te schilderen. Sindsdien gebruik ik alleen nog maar verf en kwasten en heb ik het gevoel dat ik steeds beter word, bij elke custom die ik doe.

Waarom ben je dat gaan doen?
Ik ben begonnen met het customizen van toys omdat ik het idee leuk vind om van een platform je eigen creatie te maken. Het customizen van toys bracht ook kunst terug in mijn leven, dit had ik vele jaren daarvoor opgegeven. Net op het moment dat ik toys customizen ontdekte had ik van mijn vrouw een tekenset gekregen voor mijn verjaardag. Nadat ik mijn eerste custom af had was ik verslaafd, in de eerste maand maakte ik twaalf customs! Waaronder mijn eerste clown.

Wat voor stijl zou je, jouw toys noemen?
Mijn stijl is erg cartoony, ik hou van de strakke zwarte lijnen in cartoons en ik gebruik ze dan ook veel op mijn customs. Ik ben het meest bekend voor mijn clowns en mijn mix van voodoo-clown toys. Wat ik het meest probeer te bereiken met al mijn customs zijn strakke lijnen en mooie kleuren.

Waar haal je voornamelijk je inspiratie vandaan?
Ik krijg heel veel inspiratie van mijn kinderen en oude ideeën voor cartoons die ik had als kind. Toen ik opgroeide hield ik van alle enge films over clowns zoals IT en Killer Klowns From Outerspace. De voodoo-clowns die ik maak is echt iets nieuws waar ik de laatste tijd mee bezig ben. Ik heb ook nog wat schetsen van karakters waarvan ik hoop dat ik die snel in customs kan transformeren.

Wat kunnen we nog van je verwachten?
De rest van dit jaar ben ik in ieder geval erg druk. Ik zit in een paar grote shows waar ik geweldige designs voor aan het maken ben. Het grootste wat op dit moment op mijn pad ligt is de Designer Con in november, ik zal hier een eigen kraam hebben. Ook heb ik nog wat plannen waaronden een 8" Dunny serie.

En dan de laatste vraag; wat is je favoriete toy?
Mijn favoriete productie-toy is de Calavera Dunny van Jesse Hernandez. Mijn favoriete custom die ik tot nu toe heb gedaan is de JuJu Witch Doctor 8" Dunny. Hopelijk heb ik zelf binnenkort een productie-toy bij een bedrijf. Dat zou dan zeker mijn favoriet zijn! Hahaha.

Verder wil ik je graag bedanken voor dit interview. Ook wil ik graag mijn vrouw bedanken, omdat ze met mij opgezadeld zit terwijl ik aan het schilderen ben. Zonder haar zou ik geen toys customizen. Ook wil ik graag alle artiesten bedanken voor al de goede tips die ik heb gekregen en natuurlijk iedereen die mijn kunst zo tof vinden en mij supporten.

After a long-long time of not-interviewing any artists we decided it was time for another Meet The Artist! We asked JFury if he was interested, for the people who don't know JFury click HERE, HERE and HERE!

Introduce yourself; who are you, how old are you?

Justin Phillips A.K.A. JFury. I am a self taught artist who lives in Salinas California in the U.S. I am married to my wonderful wife Adrianna and we have 3 kids who keep me pretty busy. I run a dog training buisness for my day job and do most of my painting at night after the family has gone to sleep.

Why JFury?

Well I chose Jfury as my artist name because when I was a kid my graffitti tag was Fury and when I got into the toy-art scene I decided to bring it back but added the J (Justin) just to change it up a little.

When did toy-art came into your life?

I first found out about the toy-art world when I took my family to Disneyland and saw the vinylmation figures. Which lead me to find KidRobot and I have been hooked ever since. I thought it was so great to see so many different artists take the same platform  and create some many different designs with it.

How long do you customize toys?

Well Im still very new to customizing toys I did my first custom in April 2011 and since then I have done over 70 custom toys. For the first few months I used Sharpie Paint Markers to do my customs because I had never painted anything before. The problem with the markers is they had limited colors so in October 2011 I bought some paint and brushes and decided to teach myself to use the brushes instead of pens. I have been using brushes ever since and feel that Im getting better with every custom.

Why have you started customizing toys?

I started customizing toys mainly because I loved the idea behind turning a existing platform into one of my own characters. Customizing toys also brought art back into my life, I pretty much gave up on doing anything with my art many years ago. But I found out about toy customizing right at the same time that my wife bought me a art set for a birthday gift. Once I did my first custom I was hooked, in the first month of customizing I did 12 customs. That is also when I came up with my first clown character.

How would you call your style?

My style is very cartoon like, I love the clean black lines of cartoon characters and I use them in most of my customs. I am mostly known for my crazy clown designs and my mix of clowns and tribal voodoo characters. The biggest thing I try to get with every custom I do is clean lines and vibrant colors

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get alot of  my inspiration from my kids and old cartoon ideas I had as a kid. When I was growing up I liked all the creepy clown movies like IT and Killer Klowns From Outerspace. The tribal voodoo themes are just something that I have started developing over last few months. I have some new characters sketched out that I hope to turn into customs very soon.

What do you have coming up?

Well the rest of this year I am very busy. I’m involved in a few big shows in the next few months that I have big designs planned for. The biggest thing that is coming up for me is Designer Con in November, where I will have a booth. I have some big plans for that one including a 8” dunny series.

And the last question: what’s your favorite toy?

Well my favorite production toy is the Calavera Dunny by Jesse Hernandez. My favorite custom toy that I have done is my JuJu Witch Doctor 8” Dunny. Hopefully some time soon I will be able to get a production piece with a company and then that will be my favorite toy! Hahaha.

I just want to say thank you to you for taking the time to interview me. I would also like to thank my wife who puts up with me and all the hours I spend painting. Meet The Artist: VISEone

Stel je zelf eens voor; wie ben je en hoe oud ben je?

Mijn naam is VISEone, dit is mijn artiesten naam maar het staat ook gewoon zo in mijn paspoort. Ik ben 42 jaar oud.

Waarom VISEone?

De naam VISE gaat terug naar de tijd van ik DJ 'VISE GRIP' was. Dit omdat de twee draaitafels de mixer er tussen klemmen. Dit noemen je de VISE (in het Nederlands betekend het iets zo als een klem of 'bankschroef'). Mijn partner, een MC, heette PRESSURE (in het Nederlands, druk), dus het paste wel bij elkaar. 

Ik was ook actief in de graffiti scene en op een dag ontmoette ik Sebastien en Carol, beter bekend als SCIEN en  KLOR (123KLAN). We spraken een paar keer af toen op een keer SCIEN een schets maakte in mijn blackbook. Er was nog een andere VISE dus heeft SCIEN de 'one' erachter geplakt. En zo is het altijd VISEone gebleven.

Wanneer kwam toy art in je leven?

Ik begon met digitaal tekenen aan het einde van 2007 en heb toen een tekening gemaakt van een onderwater draak, gebasseerd op een schets van een goede vriend en mentor Ralph Ferres (die overleden is in een  autoongeluk in 2010). Miller (president van PATCH TOGETHER) zag de tekening op CGSociety (Computer Graphics) en mailde me of ik de tekening op zijn site wilde zetten. Hiermee kon mensen dan op stemmen en als ik dan won werd de tekening uitgebracht als toy. Dit was mijn eerste stap in de designertoys wereld. Ik begon steeds meer magazines en blogs te bekijken.

Helaas won in niet, maar 6 maanden later mailde Miller me weer om te vragen of ik de toy niet uit wilde brengen in kunsthars. Ik was verkocht en de toy werd een groot succes, de SEA HUNTER was mijn eerste echte toy.

Tijdens het werken aan de SEA HUNTER werden ik en Miller vrienden. Ik werd lid van hun team en heb nog twee andere kunsthars toys uit gebracht de SAD DRAGON en THINK PINK en een design voor de FLOXY blindbox series die we hebben gepresenteerd op de NYCC 2010.

Hoe lang customize je al?
 Toen de SEA HUNTER werd gemaakt ben ik me meer gaan verdiepen in de designertoys wereld en zo kwam ik natuurlijk ook op het customizen van toys. Ik vond het helemaal geweldig hoe creatief andere artiesten omgingen met gewone toys en wist gewoon dat ik dit zelf ook uit moest proberen. Ik denk dat ik aan het einde van 2008 mijn eerste custom maakte.

Waarom ben je dat gaan doen?

Ik vond het gewoon zo leuk dat je maar eindeloos kan blijven variëren op toys. Gewoon te zien wat sommige artiesten doen met een toy is geweldig. 

Hoe zou je, jouw stijl omschrijven?

Soms kleurrijk, soms puur, verfrissend en schreeuwend!

Waar haal je inspiratie vandaan?

 Van alles wat ik maar zien. Ik kan niet echt iets specifieks opnoemen wat ik nou het mooiste of beste vind. Ik vind de meeste dingen wel inspirerend.

Hoe kwam de samenwerking met Outland tot stand?

Toen ik mijn COMIC STRIPPED series begon kwam ik ook met het idee van de TUBE DUNNY. Beide werden ze erg succesvol en vooral het  TUBE CONCEPT was al snel uitverkocht elke wanneer ik nieuwe maakte. Ik denk dat OUTLAND er vier had besteld maar dat hij ze allemaal binnen 1 dag al had verkocht. Hij vroeg me of ik er meer kon maken. Toen bood ik hem aan om een speciale colorway te bruiken en zijn logo er op te maken van JOE LEDBETTER. Volgens mij waren die ook al binnen 3 of 4 dagen uitverkocht.

Dus wie weet, misschien komt er wel nog een nieuwe samenwerking ooit. 




En dan de laatste vraag; wat is je favoriete toy?

Het is moeilijk om te zeggen welke nou mijn favoriet is. Om te customizen is de 7" MUNNY mijn favoriet. Mooie shape, makkelijk uitelkaar te halen en om op te werken. Ook 8" Qee bevallen me erg goed om op de te werken.

Ik heb een aantal toys verzameld over de afgelopen jaren, maar nooit echt iets heel zeldzaams of duurs. Maar, er zijn wel toys die ik erg mooi vind en die ik graag zou willen hebben. Zoals de 36" Qee, een levensgrote KAWS en een paar COARSETOYS. 

Mijn favoriete toys is natuurlijk eigenlijk de SEA HUNTER. Dit is waar het allemaal begon, het opende de deuren voor mij naar deze scene en maakte mijn naam bekend. Maar het meeste belangrijke is dat het me altijd zal herinneren aan mijn mentor en vriend Ralph (R.I.P)

Introduce yourself; who are you, how old are you?

I go by the name of VISEone, which is my artist name but it's also written in my official passport. And I’m 42.

Why VISEone?

VISE goes back to my active time beeing a DJ related to the "VISE GRIP" since the two turntables are holding the mixer between like a VISE. My partner back then was a MC called PRESSURE - so VISE made sense.

I also was active in the graffiti scene and someday I met Sebastien & Carol better known as SCIEN & KLOR (123KLAN). We hung out a couple of times and someday SCIEN did a sketch in my blackbook and since there was another writer that called himself VISE - Sebastien added the "one" to my tag and that's how I stayed with the VISEone...

When did toy-art came into your life?

 I started to paint digitally end of 2007 and made an illustration of a underwater dragon - based on a sketch by my close friend and mentor Ralph Ferres (who died in a car accident in 2010). Miller (president of PATCH TOGETHER) saw this illustration at CGSociety and emailed me if I would like to upload this image to his website - for beeing voted by the community and maybe beeing produced as a toy.

This was my first step into designertoys and I started to read blogs and magazines related to this scene.

I didn't reach the final score for the toy production in vinyl but Miller contacted me 6 months later and asked if I would like to see the dragon beeing produced in resin. So the "SEA HUNTER" got casted in resin and this was my first limited production toy and I was hooked.

Through the work on the SEA HUNTER toy (which was sold out immediately) Miller and me got friends and I became part of the PATCH TOGETHER team. During my time working with PT two more resintoys have been released (SAD DRAGON and THINK-PINK) and I did one design for the FLOXY blindbox series which we presented at NYCC 2010.

How long do you customize toys?

When the SEA HUNTER got produced I started to dig into the designer-toys world and of course stumbled over customizing toys as well. I immediately got hooked by the creative stuff other artists did with production toys and I knew I want to try out this for myself. So I think it was end of 2008 when I did my first custom.

Why have you started doing that?

I liked the endless variations of custom toys - seeing what artists do with the same platform is just amazing. 

 

How would you call your style?

Sometimes colorful, sometimes puristic, fresh and loud!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

From everything I see. I can't point out a specific style I prefer - I get hooked by too many styles and stuff I see. 

How did the colab between you and Outland Store came of?

When I started my COMIC STRIPPED series I also came up with the TUBE DUNNY custom series shortly after. Both have been very successful for me and especially the TUBE CONCEPT got sold out everytime I offered a new run. I think OUTLAND ordered 4 pieces and sold them on one day immediately - so he asked me if I could produce some more. That's when I offered him a special colorway and we used the Logo of OUTLAND by JOE LEDBETTER. I think they also got sold out within 3-4 days.

So maybe there will be another exclusive edition collabo someday again.

And the last question: what’s your favorite toy?

Hard to point out one specific toy. As a platform for customizing I really love the 7" MUNNYS - clean shape - easy to take apart and work on, I love the 8" QEEs as well and all toys that have a nice clear surface .

I collected several toys during the past few years - but nothing too expensive or real rare stuff.

There are toys I really dig and would love to own - but they are out of my financial league and so I just hope to own a 36" QEE, a KAWS life size and some COARSETOYS one day ;)

My favorite toy I have to name is of course the SEA HUNTER. This is when it all started...it opened the door to this scene, it spreaded my name and last but most important: it will always remember me to my mentor and friend Ralph (R.I.P.)
